New to Setu?
Wonderful. Everything you need for your first class is on this page — what to expect in the room, what to wear, what it costs, and how to book.
What an Iyengar class actually is
Iyengar Yoga is a practice of precision, attention, and awareness. In class, you learn to develop your body's intelligence and work intelligently with the body. We explore how to stand, extend, balance, breathe, and find greater clarity within a pose. We may employ props such as blocks, belts, blankets, bolsters, and our rope wall help you explore the poses safely and more fully, while your teacher offers careful, individual guidance.
The work can be strong and exacting, but it is never only physical. B.K.S. Iyengar wrote that in āsana, the body should be active while the brain remains “passive, watchful and alert.” That balance of action and awareness is at the heart of the practice. As you learn to organize the body with greater intelligence, the mind becomes steadier and less scattered. Strength, mobility and balance develop over time, but so too does a greater sense of presence, integration, and ease.
Our classes are never heated. What you'll find instead is a warm and friendly community -- people who support each other, care for one another, and develop friendships. You will work harder than you anticipated, and leave steadier than you arrived.
Can a beginner just walk in?
Yes. Our class levels — Beginners & Beyond Beginners and Advanced Series — refer to the level of the instructor, not the student. Students of all levels practice together in the same room, and the teacher adapts the work to each person. If it's your first time, simply tell the instructor — they will look after you.
What to wear, what to bring
Anything comfortable that lets you move freely — t-shirt, shorts, leggings. Yoga is practiced barefoot, so no socks or shoes needed. Please bring a towel to cover the studio's props while using.
We provide everything else: mats, blocks, belts, blankets, bolsters — all the props you will use. Bring nothing but yourself (and a towel).
When to arrive
For your first visit, arrive about 20 minutes early so our instructor can register you. After that, 10–15 minutes before class is plenty of time to sign in, change, and settle. Change rooms with lockers are available.
Injuries, conditions, and pregnancy
Tell the instructor before class about any injury, condition, or pregnancy — Iyengar yoga is well known for adapting poses with props so you can practice safely, and our teachers are trained for exactly this.
If you're recovering from something significant — a back injury, sciatica, chronic pain — consider starting with a private session, where the full hour is spent on you and a plan for your body.
What it costs
